As a measurement unit, there in no difference between 寸 and 英寸. In other Chinese expression,寸 refers to small quantity.
1. 寸草不生 Barren - not even one inch of grass can grow here.
2. 一寸光阴一寸金,寸金难买寸光阴 Time is precious - One inch of time is worth one inch of gold, but it is difficult to buy that inch of time with one inch of gold.
英寸 is used merely as measurement unit(Imperial units).
For metic units, 1cm = 1公分(Used in Taiwan) or 1厘米(Used in Mainland China and most South East Asia countries)
